Amy Dorr's AVON Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk PledgePage

LAST UPDATE: 8 May 2002
UPDATED: Stats & Diary (June Training Walk Dates)

PLEASE SIGN MY GUESTBOOK. YOUR KIND WORDS & THOUGHTS DO SO MUCH TO KEEP ME GOING!!

If I told you that I'm walking 60 miles for 3 days to help women with undetected breast cancer find out early enough to survive, would you support me?

What if I told you that right now there are over 1,000,000 women in the United States with undetected breast cancer? Would you sponsor me to help them find out early enough that they get watch their children grow up?

How about it I told you that 70% of those women have absolutely no risk factors for breast cancer. They don't even understand they should be checking. Would you sponsor me to help educate them?

What if I told you that the only reason I'm here to write this letter is a cautious doctor that spotted something odd during a routine check up and thus set in motion the events that saved my life. I'm here because I have access to regular medical care. Millions of women in the United States do not. Would you sponsor me to help save the lives of these medically underserved women?

Here's my last question: Would you sponsor me if I told you that somewhere in the United States someone's sister, mother, aunt or very best friend is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes...and every 13 minutes breast cancer claims another life.

These are staggering facts, with frightening numbers. The good news is that this is a fight that we absolutely can do something about. As a cancer survivor I am committed to doing everything within my power to help wipe out this disease. That means once again I'm walking in the Seattle 2002 Avon Breast Cancer 3 Day during the weekend of August 9th - all 60 miles. That means I've committed to reaching a personal goal of $4000 in pledges by June 12th. That means I'm serving as an Orientation Speaker and as a Training Walk Leader for the 3 Day again this year. It also means that I'm doing everything I can think of to get the word out that we can win the fight against cancer.

I need your help. You know that fundraising can be challenging - even in the best of times. Many things have changed in our world since September 11th, but the one thing we cannot let these horrific events change is our kindness. We must be kind without reservation. It is what makes us different than those who try to frighten us. Reaching out to help those who will never even know our name is beautiful example of kindness.

I would never ask you to do something that I wouldn't do myself. For this reason I have started my fundraising with a personal pledge of $500. I need to reach my goal of $4000 by June 12th to be able to walk in August. Please make a tax-deductible pledge to help reach this goal. The money raised will go towards non-profit breast health programs, state of the art medical research and to provide support for medically underserved women in the United States. Last year the Seattle walk raised $4.9 million. Wow! That's 3000 walkers raising $4.9 million. What an amazing display of hope, compassion and kindness.

Please follow the link to www.bethepeople.com and use your debit or credit card to pledge. You'll need to know that I'm walker #1418 in Seattle.

I hope that you choose to share this incredible experience with me. There are millions of people out there that need you and your support. If you have any questions at all please feel free to email me at kellam83@att.net.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Penny Kellam
Seattle 3-Peater #1418

PS: Please do me a favor by telling five people that you know that I do not about this pledge page and ask them for their support as well. I appreciate your efforts.

You might think I am crazy,
planning to walk for 3 days,
from Bear Mountain to Manhattan,
to raise money to fight Breast Cancer.
Maybe I am a little crazy, but........

I am doing this for all of us-
Because Breast Cancer is something that, unfortunately, touches more and more of us each day.

I am doing this in Memory of those who have lost their battle,
with Respect for those who have won their battle,
and especially in Honor of those still fighting their battle.

I am doing this because I am
a daughter,
a wife,
a mother,
a woman,
who needs to do something more active against this disease that hurts so many.

I am doing this so that the only place future generations learn about Cancer
is from their history books.

I am doing this for Emily.

This year, more than 180,000 women in the US will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.
That's more than 500 per day.
More than 40,000 will die.
80% won't have any genetic predisposition to the disease.
Breast cancer touches nearly all of us, whether we're women or men, old or young.
A woman's chance of having breast cancer during her lifetime is one in eight.
Your chance of knowing this woman is almost 100%.

Less than 1/3 of women perform monthly self-examination and get regular mammography.
Many of them are underserved,
don't have access to a doctor
or are too afraid of the results to find out.
But finding out is critical --
More than 97% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer
at an early stage survive for more than five years.

Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women.

Men can get breast cancer too. Every year, about 1,500 men will be diagnosed with the disease.

The death rate from the disease is declining -- people are surviving.
In fact, there are 2 million breast cancer survivors in America today.
But in order to survive, they need access to medical care,
access to screening, education and treatment.
And we ultimately need a cure.

So I'm asking that you please donate what you can to help me reach my goal.
Every little bit will help.

Thanks!

Tracy

Life is full of challenges and I have just taken on a very special and powerful one. The weekend of July 13, I will be joining over 3,000 participants in the Avon Breast Cancer 3-day, 60-mile walk from San Jose to San Francisco in an effort to raise money to combat breast cancer. I have a personal goal to raise $4000 in pledges by June 14. If you can help me meet this goal, it would be greatly appreciated.

My mother (she and I are pictured here) was diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer Nov 2001. She’s doing great, largely in part because she has access to regular medical care. Millions of women in the United States do not. The funds raised for this event, will help save the lives of these medically underserved women.

Did you know?

Right now there are over 1,000,000 women in the United States with undetected breast cancer

That 70% of those women have absolutely no risk factors for breast cancer. They don’t even know they should be checking

That somewhere in the United States someone’s wife, daughter, sister, mother, aunt or very best friend is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes….and every 13 minutes breast cancer claims another life

These are staggering facts, with frightening numbers. The good news is that this is a fight that together, we absolutely can do something about, but I need your help.

You know that fundraising can be challenging – even in the best of times. Many things have changed in our world since September 11th, but the one thing we cannot let these horrific events change is our kindness. We must be kind without reservation. Please make a tax-deductible pledge to help reach this goal. The money raised will go towards non-profit breast health programs, state of the art medical research and to provide support for medically underserved women in the United States.

This year, you can go online to donate and use your debit or credit card. You’ll need to know that I’m walker #2957 in San Francisco. Your payment can also be split into 10-monthly installments.

Please note: only enter my participation number, not my name, to find me in the database...you'll get an error if you try to enter both.

Challenge!! - can you part with $25 per month? With this small amount, over 10 months, your donation will be $250!

Thank you so much for supporting me in this endeavor!

Jessica
